52 year old Imo state born Onyejiaju Augustine was arrested yesterday by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for being in possession of 2.605 kilogrammes of cocaine packed as candies. He was arrested at the  Murtala Mohammed International Airport as he was about to smuggle the illegal drug out of the country en-route Etihad, Punch reports.  NDLEA spokesman Michelle Ofoyeju said Onyebuchi had been on the wanted list of the agency

Former Malawian Minister commits suicide after losing election

A former Deputy Minister of Local Government, Godfrey Kamanya (pictured above) reportedly committed suicide today May 22nd, barely a day after the Malawi elections results started filtering in showing that he'd lost the parliamentary seat he was competing for in the 2014 Tripartite elections. According to local news report, Mr Kamanya shot himself around 3:30 this morning at his house in Area 10, Lilongwe after losing the Lilongwe Msodzi North Parliamentary elections this week.

Nigerian Military denies allegation of genocide in Borno

The Defence Headquarters has released a statement denying a claim today by a Kaduna-based cleric, Dr. Ahmad Gumi, that there is genocide going on in Borno where security forces/vigilante groups round up young men and kill them in a field for allegedly being Boko Haram members. The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen Chris Olukolade, said the military is not involved in any genocide in any part of the country. Statement below... When I heard last month that the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board, headquartered in Abuja, had indicated that it would be unable to issue certification for "Half of a Yellow Sun" in time for the film's release date, I naturally assumed, at first, that what we were faced with was nothing more sinister than another instance of the typical, if frustrating, culture of wilful incompetence that we'd grappled with during the making of the film -- while shooting the film in Nigeria two years ago, there were times when we felt ensnared in impenetrable jungles of red tape, when we would be given the go-head by one arm of the government only to find our path blocked by the other arm.

Borno State to spend N150m to rehabilitate 53 escapee girls, parents

Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, yesterday announced that the state government would be spending N150million for the rehabilitation of the 53 chibok girls that escaped from Boko Haram captivity as well as their parents whose source of livelihood was affected by the abduction, Sahara Reporters reports. The Governor made this announcement when he received the Presidential Fact Finding Committee on the missing girls in his office yesterday. Gov Shettima decried the notion by some people that the missing Chibok girls was a scam or that it was a staged attempt by the state government to stop emergency rule extension in the state. El-Rufai sues PDP, Olisa Metuh, Thisday for N1.5billion

Former FCT Minister and Deputy National Secretary to All Progressive Congress, APC, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has instituted a N1.5billion libel suit against the PDP, its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh and ThisDay newspaper before a High Court in Abuja over statements he said were authorized by Metuh on behalf of the PDP linking him to the Boko Haram insurgency, which he finds defamatory.  El Rufai said the defamatory statements were published in Thisday newspaper which he joined in the suit as third defendant. Mallam El-Rufai said that in a separate Thisday newspaper publications of March 17 and March 28 , Metuh claimed that he (El-Rufai) collected N5billion as consultancy fee from the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria , Lamido Sanusi and also in another publication said that himself and Gen. The multi-billion naira drones purchased by the Nigerian Government in 2006 for the surveillance of petroleum pipelines in the Niger Delta that might have been used by the military in the search for the missing Chibok girls are said to be obsolete due to lack of maintenance & use since they were bought   Vanguard reports that Tsur Dvir, a  Marketing Officer for Aeronautics Defense Systems , a firm based south of Tel Aviv, that supplied Nigeria with Aerostar unmanned aerial vehicles, said yesterday that to the best of their knowledge, the drones are not operational.

The President has released a press statement condemning the bomb blast that occurred this afternoon at Terminus market in Jos. Find the statement signed by his spokesperson, Reuben Abati, below President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan strongly condemns the bomb blasts in Jos, Plateau state, today, describing the perpetrators of this tragic assault on human freedom as cruel and evil.  He has also directed all relevant agencies to mobilise support and relief efforts in aid of the victims. Footballer dies after horror tackle during Indonesian Premier League match

 A footballer has died from the injury he suffered on the pitch following a horror challenge during an Indonesian Premier League match. Persiraja striker Akli Fairuz (in orange) was injured after taking a boot to the body from PSAP Sigli goalkeeper Agus Rahman as the pair raced for the ball in the area. Players, clearly incensed by the tackle, clashed on the pitch while the referee had to be moved away by security. Fairuz was substituted but managed to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines. However, the attacker later took a turn for the worse and had to be admitted to hospital. It was soon discovered that Fairus had suffered bladder leakage and, a few days after the match, passed away from his internal injuries. Sad. May his soul rest in peace. The police have reduced the number of people that died today when twin bombs went off at Terminus market in Jos, to 42, but some eye-witnesses insist the number is way higher than that...marking it up to over 200 because it's the commercial hub of the city and was filled with people when the blast occurred. Senate Okays Emergency Rule in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa

The Senate today gave its nod for the extension of Emergency Rule in the troubled North East states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. The House of Reps had on May 15th approved the extension. With the Senate's approval, extension of Emergency Rule by the Federal Government can now be effected by 6 months.

Ailing ex-minister of Information and former NAFDAC boss, Prof Dora Akunyili who reportedly left for India on Sunday May 11th after her health deteriorated, is said to have started her treatment. According to a statement she released through her Media Advisor, Mr. Isaac Umunna, Prof. Akunyili expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and goodwill towards her since the information of her deteriorating health emerged on Sunday . The statement reads in part;

There was serious riot at Caleb University, Imota Lagos this evening. Unconfirmed reports say the riot started when a Muslim student who was saying his prayers was disrupted by one of the porters in the male hostel ... plus other irregular enforced school rules and security misunderstandings. Another Nyanya bus station bomber arrested

Another Nyanya bomber has been arrested. Abubakar Sadiq Ogwuche (pictured above) was arrested today in Sudan where he was hiding after the Federal government placed a N25m reward on his head. He was arrested by Interpol with help from DSS and will be extradited to Nigeria to face charges of terror. This makes it a total of six suspects so far arrested. DSS on Monday paraded five suspects. Ogwuche is said to be a student of Arabic Language at the International University of Africa, Sudan. He is British born and is the son of retired Col. Agene Ogwuche. He served in the Intelligence Unit of the Nigerian Army at Child Avenue, Arakan Barracks, Lagos, between 2001 and 2006 and was arrested in 2011 for being involved in terror activities but was released on bail to his father.

An update by Dr. Peregrino Brimah of ENDS.ng More details are coming in on how the Civilian-JTF, civilian vigilantes staved off a Boko Haram attack and possible abduction in Kalabalge local government, northeast Borno state, near the Cameroonian border. The villagers who were prepared for the Boko Haram attack had dug out trenches for the purpose. The Rann village, located in the middle of a Boko Haram strong-hold, had been attacked by Boko Haram in the recent past. In that attack they had allegedly acquired two light- weight armored tanks and some AK47 rifles. They refused to turn in this ammunition to the government in an increasingly common response as more villages in the north are determined to take up arms to defend themselves in the current state of deadly insecurity. EFCC arraigns two for defrauding a South African of $60,000

Read the EFCC press release below... The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned the duo of Nnanna Kalu, 26 and Ukaegbu Arisa Oti, 27, before Justice F. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court Umuahia, Abia State on a 28-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretense and forgery. The two are alleged to be part of a five-man syndicate that defrauded one Michael J. Firm (a South African ) of the sum of $60,000 (sixty thousand dollars) under the pretense of registering his company with National Agency for Foods Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to enable it supply the Federal Ministry of Defence with pre-cooked meals in sachets. Sandgrose market beat Ilasamaja Zone 3 in the final of the 2014 Lagos Traders Cup on Sunday May 11th, 2014. In a tight and keenly contested final, Sandgrose scored the only goal of the game in the first half to ensure that its 10 players and officials will enjoy an all expense paid trip to Brazil courtesy of tournament sponsors, MTN. Obalende defeated Babalola market 3-0 in the third place match played shortly before the final. Earlier in the day, Sandgrose had defeated Babalola 2-1 in the first semifinal while Obalende lost to Ilasamaja 2-1 in the other semifinal. For finishing as first runners up, Ilasamaja walked home with a trophy and cash prize of 700, 000. Obalende also got 400, 000 and a trophy for their efforts. Continue

Prophetess sets 9yr old daughter ablaze for allegedly being a witch

  37year old prophetess Bose Oluwole (pictured above) of the Celestial Church of Christ in Epe, Lagos has been arrested by the police for allegedly setting her 9 year old daughter, Damilola, on fire. The woman said her child was possessed with witchcraft and was trying to deliver her according to God's instruction to her. She allegedly poured kerosene on the little girl's body and set it ablaze.   Damilola is currently at the Epe General Hospital where she is being treated for first degree burns in the emergency ward.   PM News reports that residents of her Ijebu-Ode Road, Odomola, Epe home where the incident happened immediately informed the police of her hideous crime.  Wow! This morning on the 3rd mainland Bridge in Lagos, this Hyundai Car went up in flames after the engine caught fire.. According to eyewitnesses, other drivers tried to help put out the flames with fire extinguishers but failed as they watched the vehicle burn to ashes... Sad but fortunately,no live was lost...
